大福香辣鸡煲 (Da Fu Xiang La Ji Bao)

刚刚晚饭时间又下起雨来,不禁让我想起2天前那锅热腾腾的香辣鸡。如果能马上来一锅就太棒了。。

Boss’ first question was: “你们要吃多辣?” to which we replied with “多数人吃多辣?” Considering Dear’s palate, we agreed on being ‘most people’ and chose level 3 spiciness for the sauce that the chicken comes in.

It might not look like much at point of serving and one might even wonder ‘how good can this dark-coloured chicken dish taste?’

Served cooked and piping hot

Eager to find out, I plunged the ladle into the pot and liked the bite-sized chunks of chicken it scooped up. In went the ladle again for some sauce( along with some onion, garlic and green pepper) to drizzle over our rice.

The chicken had the pseudo-vegetarian and apprehensive meat-eater me at first bite. Tender, easy to tear off and without foul taste.

看到青椒还蛮加分的,尤其当又吃得出它在汤汁里头的‘历练’。那晚,锅里的青椒都移民到我胃里去了。。呵呵!

As we ate, Boss Tan sat with us sharing the birth story of this dish, the simple ingredients used, watching us for some non-verbal feedback and guiding us to proper enjoyment of his creation. We could hear and later taste the thought and heart he put in.

As the meal progressed, we became gradually aware of our greater enjoyment for this aromatic pot of chicken than that  for the frog leg porridge at Geylang Lorong 3.  The 无饭不欢 beings that we are.  So, just the 2 of us, we polished off the entire pot with 4 bowls of rice in total.

Boss Tan says this smaller $18.50 pot can feed 2-3 pax, adding that he found us big eaters which we do not deny. Of my 1.5 bowls of rice, the last 0.5 bowl was largely taken with just the fragrant gravy and green pepper that I wanted to savour more of.  That, and I generally can’t bear wasting food.  Even if it’s spicy food which I should not consume too much of.

As I haven’t been having home-cooked soup as often I prefer, we had ordered a portion of peanut lotus root soup while waiting for the chicken to be served.

Seriously, we had too much to eat that evening.  T’was a satisfying Friday night dinner stuffing our tummies with awesome goodness.

Some side-dish suggestions available for a more balanced meal,a la steamboat style.

We will most certainly return to challenge spiciness level 4 or 5, order some side dishes to go along and wash it all down with a beer.

The next time the rain gets to me, we’ll be heading down to challenge ourselves.

Hardcore spicy food challengers can call a day in advance to express desire for a pot of spice level 10 and above.
